White Americans’ Reactions to Racial Disparities in COVID-19

I fielded a survey experiment on nationally representative sample of 591 white Americans to test whether exposure information about the disparate impact COVID-19 Black people influenced Americans’ opinion policies. found that racially prejudiced who were exposed treatment diminished importance wearing face mask. They also became more supportive outdoor activities without social distancing guidelines, likely perceive shelter-in-place orders as threat their individual rights and freedoms, less African following guidelines. Conversely, did not endorse an anti-Black stereotype These findings highlight well-intentioned public health campaigns may inadvertently exacerbate existing race-based disparities.
